Buzzword: Upskilling Yourself

Buzzword: Upskilling Yourself

The Buzzword “Upskilling” means learning new skills that keep you competitive today for the job you’ll have tomorrow.

Some employers will upskill you into the job categories they want to fill in the future.
Most employers won’t.
Most employers will let go of people who haven’t upskilled themselves, and they’ll hire people who have.

What does this mean for you? You must invest in
UPSKILLING YOURSELF to ensure your career stays Future-Proofed

HOW TO UPSKILL YOURSELF

1. Pay Attention

Every year, even if you’re not looking for a job, readjust your personal career-life vision and research the job market as if you were looking for a job. Why?

  • You’ll stay focused on your own, personal vision of success–at work and at home–and become a better advocate for what you want and need

  • You’ll stay abreast of workforce trends in your industry by paying attention to what employers are hiring for, and this will help you seek the training and experience you need to stay competitive

  • You’ll build a more useful network and keep your LinkedIn profile up to date so you can attract more passive job inquiries that will help you understand your value in the job market

2. Gain New Skills

Every year, even if you’re not looking for a job, work on developing the skills that will make you more employable in the year ahead.

  • By doing #1 above, you’ll know what certifications and experiences you’ll need to stay competitive in the job market as it’s changing–use this knowledge to stay current!

  • Work on your communications and leadership skills to continue to add value to your resume that can’t be automated by advances in artificial intelligence

  • Develop your personal brand so that people in your company and in the industry know you and what you’re capable of, to help attract new opportunities and experiences

3. Take Responsibility for Your Own Career Development

Even if you’re lucky enough to get employer-sponsored training and support, ensure that you’re getting the kind of training and experience that will prepare you to achieve your goals (not just theirs)

  • No matter how generous the company is, they don’t know what success looks like for you and your family in the future

  • To be sure you’re positioning yourself for the kind of success that’s important to you and your family, you need to advocate for yourself, ask for the training and support that will help you succeed

  • When it comes to “people skills,” no matter how much others support you, only you can develop yourself to be irreplaceable by human or machine
